Microscopic Ocean
The realm of Microscopic Ocean is omnipresent in the global ocean. Though unseen, microbes constitute more than 90 percent of the biomass in the oceans and can have a profound impact on an environment. The distinct technology for exploration of organisms hidden by small size separates the microscopic as a realm encompassing the prokaryotes and protists, minute microbes without complex cells.
One CoML field project in this realm:
Marine Microbes: ICoMM
An international project to use emerging technology to survey marine microbe diversity and to build a cyberinfrastructure to index and organize what is known about microbes, the world’s smallest organisms, which account for 90 percent of biomass in oceans.
