History of Marine Animal Populations (HMAP)
The History of Marine Animal Populations (HMAP) is the historical component to the Census of Marine Life. The concept was originally proposed by Poul Holm, Tim Smith and David Starkey (“History of Marine Animal Populations,” 1999). It is an interdisciplinary (history, ecology, paleo-ecology) research program that uses historical and environmental archives to examine the changes in marine communities over the past 500-1000 years. The goals of HMAP are to examine the ecological impacts of large-scale harvesting, long-term changes in stock abundance, and the role of marine resources in historical development.
More information on this project, including a list of HMAP Case Studies, can be found at the HMAP project website.
