May 2008 – Hangzhou, China
Synthesis Group meeting (held before Scientific Steering Committee meeting) – This initial 1-day meeting of the Synthesis Group occurred before the group was funded and was primarily for organizational purposes.

August 2008 – Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA
This 2-day Synthesis Group meeting included discussions with Andy Solow (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) and presentations by Patrick Leary from the Encyclopedia of Life (Marine Biological Laboratory) and Peter Binfield from PLoS ONE (San Francisco, CA). Census Videographer Rick Morris was there to tape some of the proceedings and interview some of the participants.

November 2008 – Valencia, Spain
This Synthesis Group meeting preceded the SSC meeting and followed the World Conference on Marine Biodiversity held in the City of Arts and Sciences.

And after several days of synthesis workshops, plenary talks, and the SSC meeting, the Synthesis Group held a 1-day meeting. This marked the first time that all members of the Synthesis Group were able to attend:
