Key Personnel and Responsibilities

Paul Snelgrove, Synthesis Group Chair

Paul is a Professor at the Ocean Sciences Centre and Department of Biology and Canada Research Chair in Boreal and Cold Ocean Systems at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. He chairs the Synthesis Group of the Census of Marine Life.  He received his Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography from Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Michele DuRand

Michele DuRand, Synthesis Manager 

Michele manages the Synthesis Group of the Census of Marine Life and is based in the Department of Biology at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada.  She received her Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography from Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Fred Grassle

 Fred Grassle, Synthesis Group Team 

Fred is a Professor and the former director of the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences (IMCS) at Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA. He is co-founder of the Census of Marine Life program and served as the Chair of the international Scientific Steering Committee from 2000-2008. He received his Ph.D. from Duke University.

Ron O’Dor

 Ron O’Dor, Synthesis Group Team 

Ron is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and Co-senior Scientist for the Census of Marine Life. He received his Ph.D. from University of British Columbia.

Boris Worm

 Boris Worm, Synthesis Group Team 

Boris is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and Co-leader of the Future of Marine Animal Populations (FMAP) project for the Census of Marine Life. He received his Ph.D. from University of Kiel.

Myriam Sibuet

 Myriam Sibuet, Synthesis Group Team 

Myriam is Senior Scientist Emerita in residence at the Institut Océanographique de Paris, Fondation Albert 1er de Monaco and is a Vice Chair of the Census of Marine Life. She received her Dr ès Sciences Naturelles from Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris.

Patricia Miloslavich

 Patricia Miloslavich, Synthesis Group Team 

Patricia is a Senior Professor at the Department of Environmental Studies, Universidad Simón Bolívar in Caracas, Venezuela and Co-senior Scientist for the Census of Marine Life. She received her Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Quebec at Rimouski, Canada.

Darlene Crist

 Darlene Crist, Synthesis Rapporteur 

Darlene is Director of Communications for the Census of Marine Life with the Education and Outreach Team at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, Narragansett, Rhode Island, USA.

Pat Halpin

 Pat Halpin , Liaison for Mapping and Visualization 

Pat is Gabel Associate Professor of the Practice of Marine Geospatial Ecology and Director of the Geospatial Analysis Program at the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Science, Duke University, USA and leader of the Mapping and Visualization Team for the Census of Marine Life. He received his Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from the University of Virginia.

Edward Vanden Berghe

 Edward Vanden Berghe, Liaison for OBIS

Edward is the Executive Director of the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS), based at Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA. He received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the Free University Brussels.

 Kristen Yarincik, Liaison for Secretariat

Kristen is the Senior Program Manager for the International Secretariat of the Census of Marine Life and is based at the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, Washington, DC, USA. She received her M.Sc. in Earth Sciences from Boston University.

Sara Hickox

 Sara Hickox, Liaison for Education and Outreach 

Sara is the Director of the Office of Marine Programs at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, Narragansett, Rhode Island, USA and leader of the Education and Outreach Team for the Census of Marine Life. She holds master’s degrees in Animal Physiology from University of Kentucky, Marine Science from University of Massachusetts, and Marine Affairs from University of Rhode Island.

 Jesse Ausubel, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and The Rockefeller University

Jesse is a Vice President, Programs, at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and Director of the Program for the Human Environment and Senior Research Associate at The Rockefeller University, both in New York, USA. He is co-founder of the Census of Marine Life program.
