Indian Ocean
A Regional Committee for Census of Marine Life in the Indian Ocean (IO-CoML) was established in 2003 with support from the Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO) and the UN Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). The National Institute of of Oceanography in Goa, India houses the Secretariat for the IO-CoML.

Dr. Wafar is a scientist with the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in Goa, India, where he researches the management of critical marine habitats and protection of their biodiversity. His prior research interests include biological and chemical cycles, such as nitrogen recycling in tropical marine ecosystems, and deep water circulation. He received his PhD in Biological Oceanography from the University of Paris.
