University of Aberdeen Seeks Department Chairs
UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN
SCHOOL OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES
CHAIRS IN MARINE BIODIVERSITY AND FISHERIES SCIENCE
The University of Aberdeen wishes to appoint two Chairs, one in the area of Marine Biodiversity and the other in Fisheries Science. These appointments are integral to the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS) initiative (http://www.masts.ac.uk/). MASTS is a collaboration among ten of Scotland’s research institutions with the Scottish Funding Council to pool marine research expertise and further enhance Scotland’s position as a world leader in marine science. Investments are being made in nine research themes ranging from the intertidal to deep oceans, genes to ecosystems, with an emphasis on global change, fisheries and aquaculture.
We are seeking two scientists of international standing and excellence who have provided leadership and innovation in their respective fields. In addition to running an internationally competitive research programme they will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and will help to deliver the MASTS aims. The successful candidates will have outstanding track records, international stature and recognition in the area, excellent publication records and active externally funded research programmes.
The Chair in Marine Biodiversity will have outstanding achievements in understanding patterns and processes affecting biodiversity in the marine environment. Focus can be in any area, including but not limited to, relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning and services, taxonomy and evolution, conservation and management of marine systems for multiple uses and causes and consequences of biodiversity change.
For the Chair in Fisheries Science, the successful candidate will be an internationally recognised expert in studies on sustainable exploitation of marine living resources. Recognising the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of fisheries science within the wider framework of ecosystem-based marine management we invite applications from leading scientists working in all relevant fields.
Salary will be negotiable on the Grade 9 salary scale with placement according to qualifications and experience.
Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Chris Secombes, Head of School of Biological Sciences (tel: 01224 272857, email firstname.lastname@example.org)
